In the Community

The Safe Streets Fund provides hands-on learning opportunities for our most vulnerable street users where they need it the most – near their schools, senior centers and community-based organizations.

Through School-Based Programs, children study the science of safety and learn strategies to stay safer when traveling on foot, by bike, and in vehicles. Art and theater residency programs provide opportunities for students to share safety information with the larger community.

Safety Cities provide third graders with hands-on instruction using a simulated streetscape with real signs, signals and markings. The curriculum teaches safety as a decision-making process using tools rather than rules to build self-esteem and a sense of responsibility for oneself and others.

Through outreach programs at Senior Centers older adults identify pedestrian safety concerns in their communities and become involved as advocates for safer streets. Theater residency programs engage seniors in the creation and performance of original safety-themed plays.

Safe Kids New York City is a coalition of the NYC Department of Transportation, NYC Department of Health, NYC Administration for Children’s Services, NYC Fire Department, hospitals, and other organizations that work together to educate families and healthcare workers about preventing unintentional injuries on the road, at home, and at play.
